St. John of the Cross wrote, "The Father spoke one word from all eternity and he spoke it in silence, and it is in silence that we hear it." During the liturgy, we lift our voices in music, song, and words of praise to show our love for God and one another. But in the midst of our Eucharistic celebration, we also need to allow for moments of silence in order to give God a chance to respond. By fostering times of outward silence to rest our hearts in, we help to develop the inner silence we need to hear God speaking to us in the same gentle whisper that Elijah heard on Mount Horeb. And in this way, we can more fully participate in and immerse ourselves within the mystery of the divine liturgy.
May I hear the voice of God in my life, recognize it, and truly understand and listen. Amen.
