Brings to mind the parable of the sheeps and goats at Mt. 25:31-46 and a poem written by Oscar Romero:
No one can serve two lords.
There is only one God,
and that God will either be the true one,
who asks us to give things up when they become sin,
or it will be the god of money,
who makes us turn our back on the Christian God.
The heart of true religion isn't about politics of purity or judging others for their actions and choices. Rather, it's about interconnectedness, relationships, care and concern for others. How we treat others is our spiritual practice, and it's only in the present moment (not after death) that we choose God (love) or Mammon (greed).
It's obvious that we're being coerced to choose Mammon by the logic of our socio-economic system and those who profit from it the most, and the consequences reflect that. The question is, what will it take for that to change?
When will Mary's words in Luke 1:46-55 ring true? When will our love for others throw down the rulers from their thrones and lift up the lowly? When will our love allow the hungry to be filled with good things and the rich sent away empty?
